Moonrise Moment

Eclipses glossary

What is greatest eclipse?

Greatest Eclipse is the instant when the alignment of an eclipse is at its maximum, such as when the Moon passes closest to the axis of Earth's shadow during a lunar eclipse.

What it means

Greatest Eclipse is part of eclipse geometry and timing. Eclipses require the Sun, Earth, and Moon to align near the points where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the ecliptic. That tilt is why an eclipse does not occur at every new or full Moon.
