Overview

Moonrise Moment helps you find the next moonrise from where you are standing. We do not sell personal information, we do not run advertising, and the app does not require an account.

We do collect limited telemetry so we can understand whether the app is working, which features are being used, and where crashes or errors happen.

Information You Provide

If you send feedback from the app, we receive the category and message you choose to submit. You can optionally include the Moonrise version, build number, operating-system version, and device type. In-app feedback does not include your location or email address and is delivered to our private support workspace. If you email us for support, we receive your email address and the content of your note.

If you download Moonrise Moment through the App Store or Google Play, Apple or Google processes the download and related account or purchase information under its own terms.

Location

The iOS and Android apps ask for foreground location permission so they can calculate moonrise timing and direction for your current horizon. Your latitude and longitude are used on your device for those calculations. Moonrise Moment does not request background location access.

The app does not send latitude or longitude to PostHog or RevenueCat. To estimate nearby terrain and horizon delay, the app may send nearby coordinate samples to the Open-Meteo elevation API. Open-Meteo may keep server logs for troubleshooting; their terms say these logs can include geographic coordinates and are deleted after 90 days.

Notifications, Alarms, and Live Activities

If you choose "Notify Me," the app schedules local moonrise alerts. On iOS, it may also start or update a Live Activity for the countdown. On supported Android devices, you may optionally allow special alarm access for more precise alert timing; without it, Moonrise Moment schedules an approximate local alert. You can use the app without enabling alerts. Notification preferences such as lead time and sound on/off are stored as app settings.

Telemetry and Analytics

Moonrise Moment uses PostHog in the iOS app. The current configuration records app lifecycle events, explicit screen views, selected app actions, and error information. Automatic element interaction capture and automatic screen capture are disabled, and PostHog session replay is turned off.

The iOS and Android apps use RevenueCat to understand how many installations are new or returning. RevenueCat assigns a random anonymous identifier that is stored on your device and reused when you reopen the app. It receives basic app and device information, such as the app version, operating-system version, locale, and the times the app contacts its service. Reinstalling the app or using another device may create a new identifier. We do not send RevenueCat your name, email address, location coordinates, or advertising identifiers.

Moonrise Moment is free and has no in-app purchases. RevenueCat can process store purchase history if present; no payment information is requested by Moonrise Moment. The Android app does not include PostHog or session replay.

Examples of telemetry events include:

  • opening the app or completing onboarding
  • requesting location permission
  • refreshing moonrise data or encountering a refresh error
  • enabling, disabling, or testing a moonrise alert
  • opening the "Find It" moment screen

Event properties may include app settings and moonrise context such as alert lead time, sound preference, distance unit, north reference, whether daytime moonrises are included, moon phase, illumination percentage, bearing, altitude, terrain adjustment, and whether a demo location was used.

Website Analytics

The production Moonrise Moment website uses Google Analytics 4 to measure page views, visits, traffic sources, and clicks to our App Store and Google Play listings. A store-link click does not tell us whether you downloaded or installed the app. Google Analytics uses cookies with pseudonymous browser identifiers and processes basic device, browser, and network information to produce usage reports.

We do not enable Google advertising signals, advertising personalization, session replay, or automatic form tracking. Page URLs sent to Analytics exclude fragments and query parameters except UTM campaign parameters; referrer URLs exclude all query parameters and fragments. The tag does not run on development or preview sites, or when your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track. We do not send names, email addresses, feedback messages, or precise location coordinates to Google Analytics.

We connect Search Console to Analytics to compare Google search queries and landing-page performance with website usage. You can also use Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

The website does not include PostHog. Vercel hosts the site and may process technical logs to deliver pages, prevent abuse, and troubleshoot operational problems.

What We Do Not Collect

  • We do not require an account.
  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We do not use advertising trackers.
  • We do not send your precise latitude or longitude to PostHog or RevenueCat.
  • We do not intentionally collect sensitive personal information.

How We Use Information

We use information to:

  • provide moonrise timing, direction, horizon, notification, alarm, and iOS Live Activity features
  • understand which features are useful
  • measure new and returning anonymous app installations
  • debug errors, crashes, and failed notifications
  • review in-app feedback and respond to support emails
  • protect the website and app from abuse or technical problems

Service Providers

We use a small number of service providers to operate Moonrise Moment:

  • Apple for App Store distribution, optional TestFlight beta distribution, push notification infrastructure, and app platform services.
  • Google for Google Play distribution, Android platform services, website Analytics, and Search Console.
  • PostHog for app telemetry, analytics, and error tracking.
  • RevenueCat for anonymous customer and app activity reporting.
  • Open-Meteo for elevation data used to estimate terrain and horizon delay.
  • Vercel for website hosting.
  • Slack for receiving and reviewing feedback you choose to submit in the app.

Retention

App settings stay on your device unless you delete or reset the app. Analytics and operational logs are retained only as long as needed for product analytics, reliability, troubleshooting, security, or legal requirements.

Your Choices

You can deny or revoke location permission in iOS or Android Settings. You can turn moonrise alerts off in the app or in your device's notification settings, and Android users can revoke special alarm access in Settings. You can delete the app to remove its locally stored settings from your device.
