The Moon crosses Earth’s outer shadow

A penumbral lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes through the penumbra, the faint outer part of Earth’s shadow, without entering the darker umbra. From the Moon, Earth covers only part of the Sun. Some direct sunlight continues to reach every point on the visible lunar surface, so there is no crisp dark bite.

Instead, the Full Moon dims gradually. The effect is often strongest on the side closest to the umbra, where the disk can take on a soft gray or tea-colored shading.

Why it can be difficult to notice

The human eye adapts to brightness. Without a normal Full Moon beside the eclipsed one for comparison, a slight overall reduction is easy to overlook. Thin cloud, haze, moonlight reflected from snow, and nearby artificial lights can mask the change.

Very shallow penumbral eclipses may be effectively invisible to casual observers. Deeper ones can become apparent around maximum, particularly in photographs taken with identical exposure settings before and during the eclipse.

How to observe one

Find the published time of greatest eclipse in your local time zone and begin comparing the Moon at least 30 minutes earlier. Choose an unobstructed location and reduce glare from lamps. If you photograph it, lock exposure, focus, and white balance; automatic settings may brighten the dimmed Moon and conceal the very change you are trying to record.

Penumbral eclipses are understated, but they demonstrate the true size and structure of Earth’s shadow extending far into space.
