Cloud cover is more useful than rain chance
A dry forecast does not guarantee a visible Moon. For sky watching, examine total cloud cover and cloud layers. Thin high cloud may transmit a bright Moon while adding a halo. Broken low cloud can create brief viewing windows. A solid deck at any level can block it completely.
Forecast percentages describe an area and time interval, not a promise about the exact patch of sky above your horizon. Satellite imagery and nearby webcams can help during the final hours.
Haze and smoke reshape moonrise
Near the horizon, moonlight crosses a long atmospheric path. Humidity, dust, pollution, sea salt, and wildfire smoke scatter and absorb light. The Moon may appear deep orange, faint, distorted, or invisible until it climbs. These conditions make observed moonrise later than the geometric calculation even without a solid obstruction.
Turbulence affects detail
Moving pockets of air with different temperatures bend light unevenly. Through binoculars or a long lens, the lunar edge may shimmer and fine detail may soften. This “seeing” often improves when the Moon climbs higher, although local heat rising from roofs and pavement can remain disruptive.
Plan with a window rather than one minute. Compare several forecast models, identify a backup direction or location, and keep watching after the nominal rise. Some of the most atmospheric Moon photographs happen when cloud and haze are imperfect but not completely opaque.
