Solar eclipse vs. lunar eclipse: the quick difference

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. A lunar eclipse happens when Earth passes between the Sun and Moon. Solar eclipses require safe solar-viewing protection; lunar eclipses are safe to watch with your eyes, binoculars, or a telescope.

The alignment is reversed

Both kinds of eclipse require the Sun, Earth, and Moon to line up, but the object in the middle changes.

  • During a solar eclipse, the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. Its shadow falls on a narrow portion of Earth.
  • During a lunar eclipse, Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon.

Solar eclipses occur at new Moon, while lunar eclipses occur at full Moon. They do not happen every month because the Moon’s orbit is tilted by about five degrees relative to Earth’s path around the Sun. Most months, the three bodies pass slightly above or below exact alignment.

Visibility and duration

Total solar eclipses are geographically selective. The path of totality is narrow, and totality at one location lasts only minutes. A lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere on Earth’s night side where the Moon is above the horizon. Its visible phases can unfold over several hours.

Weather matters for both, but local timing matters differently. Solar-eclipse planning requires knowing whether your location lies inside the partial or total path. Lunar-eclipse planning requires checking whether the Moon has risen before the interesting phases begin and whether it sets before they finish.

The safety rule is different

Never look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun without certified solar-viewing protection. A lunar eclipse needs no special eye protection. The Moon remains safe to view with unaided eyes, binoculars, or a telescope throughout the event.
